Ex-MB likely to be left out
Syed Razak, the incumbent Kubang Rotan assemblyman, resigned as mentri besar in December 2005 due to health reasons.
Some of the incumbents are likely to be dropped while four, including state MCA chief Datuk Beh Heng Seong (Gurun), have expressed their wish not to seek re-election.
Incumbent Barisan MPs likely to be dropped are Datuk Dr Wan Azmi Wan Ariffin (Sik) and Datuk Mahadzir Mohd Khir (Sungai Petani).
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid submitted the list of potential candidates that contained 30% newcomers to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday.
Incumbent Barisan assemblymen likely not included in the list are Datuk Md Hasan Bulat (Ayer Hangat), Datuk Mohd Jamil Idross (Pengkalan Kundor), Datuk Abd Razak Hashim (Guar Chempedak), Datuk Dr Affifudin Omar (Kuala Nerang), and Datuk Dr Shuib Saedin (Pantai Merdeka).
The fate of some incumbent Barisan MPs including Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Skeikh Fadzir (Kulim-Bandar Baharu), Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim (Baling), Datuk Lim Bee Kau (Padang Serai), Datuk Abu Bakar Taib (Langkawi), Datuk Mohd Johari Baharom (Kubang Pasu) and Datuk Zainuddin Maidin (Merbok) is still unknown.
Observers say chances of them being selected to defend the seats are still 50-50.
State Puteri Umno chief Shahanim Mohammad Yusoff is tipped to contest the Pantai Merdeka state seat.
